PRESENTATION OUTLINE

MY IDENTITIES

By: Evan Newlund

MY TWO IDENTITIES

  • Nordic Skier, aka cross country skier.
  • Cross country runner

RUNNER: IN WHAT WAYS DOES CC RUNNING INDIVIDUALIZE ME?

  • Not many people run cross country, so it makes me unique.
  • Cross country trenches you the values of hard work and pushing past your limits, which set me apart from other students who don't have very much work ethic.

  • Cross country is a lifestyle sport, so while others may be quitting their sports at forty or so, I can keep running almost my whole life.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES CC SKIING INDIVIDUALIZE ME?

  • Cross country skiing is also a sport many people don't do.
  • It is an odd sport which takes time to learn, which taught me the values of perseverance.

  • Focuses more on having fun and rather than hard work, taught me values of community and how to take a break and have fun sometimes.
  • This individualizes me from the students that, in contrast, work too hard and don't know how to take breaks.

RUNNER: IN WHAT WAYS DOES THIS IDENTITY CONNECT ME TO OTHERS?

  • Obviously it connects me to the other runners on the team, for starters.
  • It connects me to runners around the world, because we are a rather small group of people. This makes me feel like I'm a part of something larger.

SKIER: IN WHAT WAYS DOES THIS IDENTITY CONNECT ME TO OTHERS?

  • Nordic emphasizes community more than CC, so I feel more like a skier than a runner.
  • In addition, it is also a rare sport due to its expense and uniqueness, so I feel closer to fellow skiers in Minnetonka, and all around the world.

HOW DO MY IDENTITIES INTERSECT?

  • Both are Cardiovascular sports and are very similar, however they have taught me different things about myself. Cross country taught me that I am stronger than I knew I was, and Nordic taught me the values of community.
  • I feel that Nordic is more important to my identity, but CC is important as well.
  • They help me every day when the lessons I learned from CC help me to work harder and finish my homework, and my Nordic lessons help me to take breaks, have fun, and appreciate what I have.

STEREOTYPES

  • There are very little stereotypes about Nordic, but quite a few about Cross Country.
  • People think that it is a dumb, easy sport for people who can't play other sports, while in reality it is quite challenging and enjoyable.
  • In this way, Cross Country has also taught me not to care what others think and to be proud to be doing the things I love.
