What is the Brain?

The brain is the most complex part of the human body. This three-pound organ is the seat of intelligence, interpreter of the senses, initiator of body movement, and controller of behavior. Located in the skull and washed by protective fluid, the brain is the source of all the characteristics that define our humanity. The brain is the crown jewel of the human body.

The brain does many wonderful things; the brain is not one big lump. The brain consists of four major parts:
-Cerebrum
-Cerebellum
-Limbic System
-Brain Stem

Cerebrum-
The cerebrum has special areas which receive messages about sight, touch, hearing, and taste. Other areas control movement, speech learning, intelligence, and personality. The cerebrum is thought to play a critical role in the process of learning.

Cerebellum- The cerebellum controls and coordinates the movements of the muscles , like walking or swinging the arms. This means that the movement is smooth and controlled and you do not fall over when you turn around.

Limbic system- The Limbic system is a group of brain structures that are involved in various emotions such as aggression, fear, pleasure, and also in the formation of memory. Fun Fact: a chemical imbalance in the limbic system can be one of the causes of ADHD.

Brain stem- The brain stem is in charge of keeping the automatic systems of your body working. You do not have to think about your heart beating because your brain keeps it going automatically.
