Impacts

  • Social Interaction
  • Job Prospect
  • Lack of profitable skills
  • Education
  • Financial

Social interaction

  • Socialisation in today's society is mainly carried out online using digital technology.
  • If an individual is digitally illiterate they will not be able to use this technology and therefore not be able to be socially inclusive.

Social Interaction

  • This lack of social interaction can have several knock on effects, a sense of social isolation which can lead to depression, (www.aarp.org, 2013).

Job Prospects

  • If you have certain technical skills, you may get have the opportunity for promotion to a higher position within work, which in turn could give you an opportunity to work on more challenging projects or tasks.
  • If you start out in a lower-level job, acquiring or having advanced digital literacy skills will most likely help you to get a better job more quickly than you would if you didn’t have these digital literacy skills.

Lack of profitable skills

  • By having better digital literacy skills will not only mean you obtaining a higher paid job, you will be able to be a more profitable employee earning your company more revenue. This in turn will have a positive impact on society as more and more companies are embracing the digital age.

Education

  • Being digitally literate will help learners when in education. Most colleges are adopting a paperless system and using online learner portals for their course notes and assignment submission. If learners are unable to utilise this simple technology they will struggle to fully engage with the course and potentially fail.

Financial

  • Being digitally literate has financial implications as many companies are offering better deals online than in stores.
  • If people are digitally illiterate using simple technology such as the internet will be a difficulty. This may impact them in such a way as individuals will be unable to pay for bills online, apply for jobs or even catch up on day to day news. These factors will effect an individuals finances in such a way that by not using technology individuals will spend more, not earn as much and miss out on important global events.
