PRESENTATION OUTLINE

INCAN EMPIRE CONSTRUCTION

All external walls of the Incan Empire were constructed of chiseled stone blocks that fit together. They fit the blocks without the use of iron tools or wheels. How?

Two Main Techniques:

Used ramps leading to the tops of temples

Carved the rock with a collar until the unwanted portion fell off

Vincent Lee's method: a track of ladder-like sections for the roadbed (sled to place stone on) and leavers to move forward

The stones were fit together and shaped by hammer stones. Large stones were used to rough the blocks and smaller stones were used to finish and smooth the blocks.
