INCA CULTURE

CUSTOMS & TRADITIONS

  • The Worst crimes toy could commit were murder,insulting the Incas or gods
  • The method that the incas used as punishment was to push the guiltily person off a cliff and let the rocks crush them
  • Smaller crimes were punished by gouging out the eyes,or cutting off their hands and feet
  • The unfortunate we're set outside of the nearest towns gate with a begging bowl to show the other incas ,so they knew the consequences
  • There weren't many crimes in the Inca's society because they had everything they needed and they liked following the laws and usually did

SOCIAL ORGANIZATION

  • The middle class includes artisans, musicians, army captains, and accountants.
  • The lower class included sorcerers, farmers, herding families, and conscripts.
  • The basis of Inca society was the ayllu.
  • Ayllu were families that shared land, animals, and crops.
  • The Sapa Inca was the ruler of the Inca Empire.

LANUAGE

  • The Inca's spoke Quechua
  • Only 10 million people still speak Quechua today many of them also speak Spanish
  • Many Inca's also speak Spanish along with Quechua
  • he first thing ever published in Quechua was by a priest in 1560
  • Instead of writing Inca's knotted strings to records things

LANGUAGE

  • The process of tying the knots was called Quipu
  • Quipu is knotted strings of different colors
  • Quipu means knot in Quechua

ARTS & LITERATURE

  • The most important form of art was architecture.
  • There were 3 different qualities of cloth
  • The Inca didn't have a written language
  • Inca art was was simple, but highly stylized

RELIGION

  • Polytheism was the kind of religion
  • Inti was the God of the sun
  • Viracocha was the god that created the universe and mankind
  • The Sapa Inca was the descendant of Inti.

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS

  • The Incas did not have a form of currency they only traded
  • Their economy was based on trade and services
  • An Inca Job was either mining,farming,or being a noble
  • Everyone except the very old and the very young did work
  • Gold and silver was very important to the inca's economy because it could easily be formed into pots and traded

GOVERNMENT

  • When the Sapa Inca made a new law, it would be passed down the social chain.
  • Commoners had no say in political issues.
  • Whenever mishap happened, the Sapa Inca would declare a sacrifice to the gods.
  • Should someone be very beautiful or skilled, they would be able to have a say in political matters.
  • No one dared break any laws as punishment was harsh.

ECONOMIC SYSTEM

  • To the incas the most valuable trade item was cloth
  • The other types of items the incas would trade were pots,ropes,lamas,gold,and silver
  • The farmers had 1/3 of their food taken away for the nobles,and the other 1/3 was sacrificed for the gods
  • The miners would trade their gold for food from the farmers
