Inclusion

  • each student has the equal opportunity in a general education environment
  • arrange instruction to benefit all students
  • reasonable individualized instruction
  • close cooperation between general and special education teacher
  • frequent precise monitoring student progress

Mainstreaming

  • different from inclusion
  • special education students spend different periods or depends on the time (30 minutes- 1 hour) in a general education classroom
  • integration does not work, inclusion does
  • students were not supported
  • little interaction with teacher and peers

IDEA

  • requires that the movement will be toward inclusion practices
  • students required to be placed in Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
  • IEP must explain why the student will NOT participate in any general education activities and how the disability effects their participation

Affect students without disabilities?

  • many fear inclusion will take attention and time away from students without a disability
  • research has shown that it does not affect students
  • research has also shown that their level of achievement and interactions between students with and without disabilities were not affected

Impact on attitudes and relationships

  • studies have shown the positive results of relationships from inclusion
  • improvement of attitudes from studies show both students with and without disabilities
  • greater understanding and empathy
  • increase in independence, more social skills, improved behavior
  • teachers having a positive attitude strongly helps in the classroom
  • more people become exposed, knowledgeable and experienced, the greater acceptance of inclusion will happen
