Inclusion

  • Education of students with disabilities alongside their peers without disabilities
  • Global pledge for inclusion but implementation varies from country to country
  • Students with disablities thrive when given the same opportunities as their peers.

Inclusion + for students w/o Disabilities

  • No research has found negative consequences for inclusive environments. Only positive or neutral outcomes
  • Only if there are multiple students with severe emotional disabilities can there by a slight negative impact on peers.
  • Collaborative problem solving by entire school and staff is key to inclusion of students with disblities and can improve education for students without disablities

Benefits for Non Disabled Students

  • Reduced fear of human differences
  • Increased comfort and awareness
  • Growth in social cognition and tolerance
  • Improved self concept (self esteem)
  • Development of personal morals and ethics
  • Warm, caring friendships

Inclusion + for students with Disablities

  • Improved language skills, academic outcomes, reading comprehension, math skills, reading pace, peer relatinoships, social skill development, more accepted by peers, less behabior problems, less lonely, more engaged behavior
  • More likely to graduate on time, enroll in post-secondary education, be employed, have higher earnings and live independently

Effective Implementation of Inclusion

  • Teacher hesitancy towards inclusion mostly due to lack of training.
  • More training = More positive attitudes

Down Syndrome & Inclusion

  • Benefits of inclusion: improved literacy skills, academic development and language skills
  • Strengths: Strong visuals, social learners especially through observation and imitation
  • Challenges: short term auditory memory, speech and language barriers
  • Genuine friendships between students with down syndrome and non-disabled students develop through class based activities and shared interests.

Establishing National Inclusion

  • Leadership from TOP of government necessary for change. Inclusion needs to be a priority
  • Societal opinon towards inclusion must change to be more positive and supportive
  • More specific data needed to back up inclusion
  • UDL must be implememnted in schools
  • Teacher training
  • Opportunities must be created outside of the school environment (college, work) for people with disablitiies.
