Independent Versus Dependent Variables

What is an Independent Variable?

The independent variable is the thing in an experiment that you change on purpose.

What is a Dependent Variable?

The dependent variable is what you measure in an experiment and what is affected.

How do you identify the different variables?

  • To find the independent variable look for what is being changed in the experiment.
  • To find the dependent variable look for what is expected to change if you add the independent variable.
