WHAT IS HINDUISM?

  • HINDUISM IS ONE OF THE OLDEST KNOWN RELIGIONS in the world. Its first sachet scripts date as far back as 1400 BC. It is a religion of most people in India and it is the third largest religion in the world. Unlike other religions, Hinduism does not have one main founder just like Jesus, nor does it have a a single scripture just like the Bible. Hinduism is a very complex religion as it has a variety of beliefs and many Gods.
  • Beliefs include; karma, reincarnation, world as an endless cycle of creations, and many others.

WHAT IS SHIVA KNOWN FOR?

  • Shiva is one of the main gods of Hinduism. He has been described as "a destroyer" and as "a transformer" who brings things in life to the end. Shiva is the destroyer of the world, following other deities Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver.
  • The historians do not know the exact reasons for his rise as a diety. However, iconically, he is very recognizable. Shiva's facial attributes are very interesting as he has a third eye on his forehead, a crescent moon beautifying his hair, and a snake called Versus around his neck.
  • Shiva is also known for his Tandava dance of destruction, which is described as cycle of life that includes creation, endurance, and dissolution. Tandava is taken from the name Tandu, whom historians believe was the artistic creator of the dance as well as an attendant to Shiva.

WHAT MAKES SHIVA DIFFERENT?

  • Shiva is different because he is the only God of destruction. No other Gods create such harm as Shiva does. However, his destruction allows for re-creation of new life. So, Shiva is not only seen by the Hindu as a source of evil, but also as a source of good.
  • Shiva is also known to be very passionate, which leads him to extreme behaviors. These behaviors could be good such as sacrificing ones wants and staying away from many pleasures.

STORIES ABOUT SHIVA

  • There are many stories about Shiva. These stories play an important role in learning about life; they could be called life lessons. There is one story about Shiva, Parvati and the Bull. This story describes how Shiva and Pavarti were riding a bull through different towns or villages. Every time they would run into people, they would get criticized. Both Shiva and Parvati changed their behavior so that they would not get criticized, but no matter what they did they still did not satisfy other people. So, this would be a learning lesson for the Hindu people. Shiva stories are also used for children and have made children to become much respected people when they grew.

SHIVA'S FAMILY

  • Shiva has a family while most other Gods do not. He has a wife Parvati, two sons Kartikeya and Ganesha and one daughter Ashoksundari.
  • Shiva's family symbolizes unity and harmony. Each family member has an animal which also has a positive symbol for peaceful family life. The Hindu believe that the unity in family is the basis for the unity in society, which eventually creates peace in the world.
