  • Located in middle of a trading route
  • Traders bring culture and spices
  • Mainly Chinese and Indian influence
  • Fusion of religions like Hinduism and Buddhism

INDIGENOUS CULTURE

  • Staple foods include rice and starchy foods
  • Diverse due to islands
  • Varies by region
  • Unique character of spiciness
  • Known for variety spices, and still are today

FOREIGN INFLUENCES

  • New world produce brought by Europeans
  • Foreign foods adapted to fit customs
  • Japanese culture introduced in WWII
  • Islamic food laws have also restricted some foods

WESTERNIZATION

  • Fast food restaurants diffused in
  • New foods adapted to fit Indonesian tastes
  • Still very distinct from other cultures
