HISTORY OF THE INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION

  • The Indus Valley Civilizations were essentially a group of indiginous people
  • Started from the Chatholithic Era 3600-2600 BCE to the begining of the Early Harrapan and ended in 1800 BCE
  • Began with the introduction of writing and a uniform culture
  • The Indus Civilization flourished around 2600 BCE

DOWNFALL OF THE INDUS CIVILIZATION

  • The downfall of the Indus Valley Civilization collapsed around 1800 BCE
  • The Civilization collapsed due to
  • Over-exploitation of the enviornment
  • Drastic changes in river courses
  • Series of fooods and increased salinity in irrigated lands

RELIGION

  • There have been signs of religion connected with the civilizations
  • Some Indus Valley seals show swastikas, which are found in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism
  • Other seals show animals are presented in a formal reminiscent of late Hindu gods, Shiva and Rudra
  • The large number of figurines found in the Indus valley bring up questions of a belief in a Mother Goddess

GEOGRAPHY

  • The Indus Valley Civilization is located in the North-Western region of the Indian Subcontinent
  • Covers what is today Pakistan and the Indian States of Gujarat, Rajatha , Haryana, and Punjab
  • The huge Indus River System waters a rich agricultural landscape
  • Surrounded by High Mountains, deserts and oceans
  • At the time it was a dense forest

  • Rulers of the cities governed through the control of religion and trade, rather than military strength
  • Unicorn=An important symbol of elite
  • Bull=Leader of the herd
  • Buffalo=Posture of defense
  • Tiger=Minor administrative officers
