WHAT'S AN INFERENCE?

When an author does not include all the details in their poem or story, good readers use these two things to make an inference.

An inference is made up of two parts:
1. Clues from the text
2. Background knowledge, or schema

Our learning target for this skill is:
I can make inferences while reading fiction text and poetry.

I can infer that this cat got in trouble for rummaging through the garbage. Poor kitty was just looking for something to eat.

Making inferences is what good readers do to understand what the author is trying to say. It makes us better readers and thinkers!
