WHAT IS AN INFINITIVE/ INFINITIVE PHRASE?

  • An infinitive is a verb form that can be used as a noun, adjective, or adverb
  • Most infinitive phrases start with the word to
  • Infinitive phrases are not the same thing as infinitives because infinitive phrases contain the word
  • It modifies

HOW TO FIND AN INFINITIVE PHRASE

  • Identify and cross out all prepositional phrases
  • Look for and label the subject and verb
  • Look for the direct object if there is one
  • Look to see if there is anything modyfying it
  • If you found a phrase that describes the DO, you have found the infinitive

EXAMPLES OF AN INFINITIVE NOUNS

  • "Monica wanted TO SCORE five goals in the soccer game."
  • In this sentence, "TO SCORE" acts as a direct object. Remember that direct objects are
  • nouns; they answer who or what and receive the action of the subject.
  • Find the infinitive!- "Amelia's greatest dream was to run a marathon"
