PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HOW DO INFRARED SCOPES WORK?

BY JAY SHORT AND ISAAC BIELECKI

HOW IS THE WAVE IS CREATED?

  • Infrared light is created by thermal, or heat, energy.
  • These waves are not visible to the human eye.

HOW ARE INFRARED WAVES USED IN REAL LIFE?

  • They're used in:
  • Computers
  • Remote controls
  • Optics( military and hunting scopes)

CAN INFRARED LIGHT BE DANGEROUS?

  • Infrared light is harmless to humans unless it's highly concentrated on a single object
  • A laser is a common source that can damage people's eyes who look directly at the light

WAVELENGTH AND FREQUENCY

  • Wavelenth= 750nm - 1mm (about the size of an ant)
  • Frequency= 430THz - 300GHz

HOW INFRARED SCOPES FUNCTION:

  • Infrared scopes are equipped with electronics that allow humans to see lower frequencies when looking through them
  • They take infrared light, and change it into visible light that humans can see

FUN FACT

  • Without infrared light, Seal Team Six wouldn't have been able to kill Osama Bin Laden. Attacking at night allowed them to be virtually invisible, but they used infrared waves to see the enemy. Without infrared light, we may have had another 9/11.
