antefatto

  • The Chalkboard Shop (TCS) is a pop-up arts and crafts workstation
  • Founded in 2014 by Brittanae "Ana" Veal
  • Created in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
  • Received over one hundred visitors in Louisiana and Texas
  • Primary customers are kids between the ages of 5-12
Ana Veal agrees with education luminary, Sir Ken Robinson that kids are "educated out of creativity." This New Orleanian and psychology graduate is passionate about improving the quality of public education and believes that any child can overcome obstacles with character fortified by grittiness and creativity. She is armed with the latest research on the power of daydreaming to unleash creativity and an arsenal of DIY chalkboards to give kids a blank slate to galvanize creative thinking.

ruolo sociale dell’arte

  • We believe children are "educated out of creativity"
  • The mission of TCS is to keep kids creative
  • We teach children to use chalkboards to develop ideas
  • Aprons are provided so kids can dress up as Artists for Hire
  • We also show our customers how to bring daydreams to life
The Chalkboard Shop + Daydream Design Studio (hereinafter referred to as “TCS”) is a fun pop-up workstation for kids to design their own magnetic chalkboards and play make believe. TCS is similar to “Build-a-Bear” in that kids make a product. It’s also similar grocery store exhibits at the Children’s Museums in that it generates excitement for working. The three goals of TCS are to provide opportunities for kids to create, to make working fun, and to teach kids to use positive constructive daydreaming.

TCS developed as a reaction to the oft-restrictive confines of formal education and reduction in number of art programs. Chalkboard was chosen as a material for it's innate ability for the student-artist-entrepreneur to endlessly create, erase, then create again. When given an erasable slate, young artists test the boundaries of their creative potential in an observable progression. They begin by using chalk as they have seen it used traditionally, but gradually innovate and develop new techniques. In this way, TCS’ first goal of providing boundless opportunities for creating is realized.

To accomplish the second goal of making work fun, TCS allows kids to make believe and role play as entrepreneurial artists. Our young customers morph into artists for hire and design chalkboards for their families or other visitors to the shop. They learning planning, drafting sketches, and teamwork. Our young entrepreneurs also write receipts for their million-dollar artwork and learn basic bookkeeping.

Our third goal is to utilize positive constructive daydreaming to instill kids with self-esteem, set affirming educational goal, and stir an appreciation for hard work. Through a series of short workshops, TCS teaches the fundamentals of positive constructive daydreaming and how to use it to ensure a bright future.

esperienza d’uso

  • When our little customers find our shop, they are excited and energized
  • The tent is decorated with bold, modern patterns and bright, happy colors
  • As customers enter the tent, they may dress up as Artists in Residence
  • The tent brims with the cheerful energy of kids painting and coloring
  • Our customers and their parents leave happy that they found a fun activity
TCS is a magical place full of activity, energy and joy; it is a fun space for kids to design chalkboards and play make believe.

From the moment kids walk into our tent, we equip them with an artist's smock and they transform into professional Artists in Residence.

The kids receive commissions from their parents to create lovely works of art on their chalkboards. Once their work is complete, they may write receipts, take inventory, and perform other business tasks.

We constantly reflect on how kids experience TCS and strive to improve their experiences. We take it as a good side our happy customers are sad when it's time to go home.

Ti è mai successo di sentirti altrove
i piedi fermi a terra
e l'anima leggera andare
andare via lontano e oltre
dove immaginare
non ha più limiti

hai un nuovo mondo da inventare
sei così altrove

che non riesci neanche più a tornare
ma non ti importa
perché è troppo bello da restare
nei luoghi e il tempo
in cui hai trovato ali, sogni e cuore
a me è successo
e ora so viaggiare

Thank you!
