culture

  • way of life of a group of people
  • the ideas, the customs, and the social manners of a particular set of people or society
  • ex. food, family customs, values, languages spoken, art, clothing and religion

customs

  • are norms and expectations about the way people do things in a specific region.

values

  • are the principles or standards of behaviour; as well as what is important in life.

culture

  • tells us how to interact with others;
  • with families;
  • and society.

Heritage

  • defined as "valued objects and qualities such as historic buildings and cultural traditions that have been passed down from previous generations"

Material Heritage

  • explores the past and to discover connections between the past and the present.
  • ex. buildings, monuments, statues, paintings, books and crafts.

non-material heritage

  • includes forms of traditional and popular or folk culture such as customs, tales, languages, music, dances, rituals, festivals, medicines, cuisines, clothing, games and theatre.
  • traditions are passed on from generation to generation, by oral expression, dance or music.
