How can you effectively integrate quotes into your sentences?

Option #1

  • Introduce with a complete sentence and a colon.
  • Thoreau ends with a metaphor: "Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in."
  • (There were no pictures that would fit this slide, so you get a puppy)

Option #2

  • Use an introductory phrase with a comma
  • Thoreau asks, "Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?"

  • Make the quote part of your sentence without extra punctuation
  • Thoreau argues that "shams and delusions are esteemed for soundest truths."

  • Use short quotes as part of your sentence
  • Although Thoreau "drinks at" the stream of Time, he can "detect how shallow it is."
