International Space Station Motifs

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION SUITE

  • I taught this lesson to 15 kids ranging ages 6-12 at the YMCA
  • My lesson was part of a larger project I did with my organization to further music in my community

WATCHING THE VIDEO

  • The sound where I was at didn’t work, but I was able to overcome by using my computer/projector for video and my iPad for sound
  • The kids, for the most part, really enjoyed taking a tour of the ISS!

CLAPPING/STOMPING THE MOTIFS

  • I split the kids into 2 groups(one clapping and one stomping)so each group had one musician with it, and I clapped a third motif over the other two motifs.
  • Unfortunately, we couldn’t use all 5, but I could tell the students were enjoying the layering process regardless.

IMPROVING MY LESSON FOR THE CLASSROOM

  • One issue was not having different instruments to demonstrate. We had to get pretty loud to tell the difference between the two groups.
  • A second issue was that they lost interest a bit sooner because there were no instruments everyone could use to differentiate sounds.

BRINGING IT FULL CIRCLE

  • Although we didn’t have instruments for the few kids in my lesson, each child at the YMCA got to make a maraca and the chance to apply what they learned about layering rhythms and ISS motifs in a large “drum circle” with everybody.
  • (Not all of the children are pictured for privacy reasons)
