From my Philosophy of Technology in Education:

1) Does it enhance students' productivity?

2) Does it significantly increase scaffolding without distracting students?

3) Does it introduce a potential weakness/crutch for students?

4) Is it free and extremely easy to set up and use?

5) It may be easy to set up, but does USING IT CORRECTLY require a lot of training time?

6) Is variety the only advantage?

7) What's the long term value to students?

8) Does it encourage self-learning?

9) Will you be grading anything created with this tech?

10) What are the local, cultural, and legal implications of the tech?

Don't assume students understand how to use "common" or "basic" technology
