Cyberbullying

  • Includes sending hateful messages, lies, threats, mean comments and bashing
  • Harder to intervene to solve the issue
  • Can lead to mental illness and hurt people more than "schoolyard bullying"
  • To help prevent: be respectful on the internet and immediately report any signs of cyberbullying

Spyware

  • Damages computers
  • Caused by visiting unreliable websites
  • Leads to permanently damaging computers
  • Can lead to falling behind on work

Instant messaging

  • PRO: easy communication
  • CON: distracting
  • Distractions during school and work can damage completion of word and lead a person to fall behind

Internet predators

  • A stranger online could hide their true identity to act like someone you would be interested in talking to
  • This person could try to meet with you in person and hurt you
  • Never meet with anyone face to face that you have met online without using caution

Damaging reputation

  • Use caution before you post something
  • Once posted, an item is NEVER fully erased
  • Do not post anything you would not want a future employer to see
  • Be respectful on all social media profiles

Identity theft

  • Make sure all personal information is private and not posted online for others to access. If not strangers can access them and use your information to make fake profiles and accounts
  • Only use safe & secure websites
  • DO NOT respond to emails asking for information
  • If identity theft occurs it can be damaging for years to come
  • Protect yourself by using fraud detection

Use safe search engines

  • Only use search engines such as: Google, Bing, and Yahoo
  • They have blockers that you can turn on to only find websites that are safe content for children to use

Adults should learn childrens' acronyms

  • Too keep children safe, adult should learn acronyms so understand what is being discussed
  • Examples are...
  • ASL = Age/Sex/Location
  • IWSN = I Want Sex now
  • PAL/PAW = Parents Are Listening/Watching
  • RU/18 = Are you over 18?
  • WUF= Where are you from?

Internet Gambling

  • There are many gambling websites that are easily accessible for any age
  • It is illegal for minors to gamble
  • After a credit card is used, it could have information stolen if the website is not protected
  • This is an unsafe environment for children to be around

Statistics to keep in mind

  • 20 percent of teens have sent or posted nude or semi-nude photographs or videos of themselves
  • Currently, there are over 747,408 Registered Sex Offenders in the United States
  • 43 percent of teens aged 13 to 17 report that they have experienced some sort of cyberbullying in the past year
