What is an Internet Danger?

  • Cyber-bullying
  • Scams
  • Fake News

Cyber-bullying is another form of harassment, and it is extremely common among all age groups that use social media and all other forms of online networking. Due to the faceless nature of the internet, a cyber-bully can be anyone, from anywhere and the cyber-bully victim can be anyone, from anywhere. Harassment online is becoming a very serious problem among youth as cases of depression and suicide increased due to online cyber-bullying

The best way to combat cyber-bulling is by reporting the offence whenever it becomes necessary. Most social media sites offer a "block" option which is an effective tool for ignoring the perpetrator, and blocking your information from them.

Types Of Scams

  • Auction Fraud ex. sending money for a product to a seller online, receiving nothing in return. Commonly happens on sites like eBay
  • How to prevent this type of fraud is easy, buy from a popular sender with good reviews. Always research the seller.

Types of Scams

  • Phishing Fraud ex. receiving an email from what looks like your bank that asks you to sign in to approve your information.
  • The solution to this scam is simple, block the sender on your email service and call your bank to verify the legitimacy of the email.

Types of Scams

  • Nigerian 419 email ex. "DEAR SIR, YOUR RELATIVE BOB SMITH HAS PASSED AWAY AND LEFT YOU 4.9 MILLION DOLLARS IN NIGERIAN BANKS FOR YOU, PLEASE SUPPLY INFORMATION"
  • This email is quite common, I have received many myself. Block sender, and whatever you do, DO NOT respond.

Types of Scams

  • Fake groups asking for donations through email
  • Fake groups asking for donations through email and random contests saying you have won an expensive prize, only verification is needed to accept the prize. On top of the previously listed ways to prevent this, another useful tip is to protect and pay attention to who and what you give your email too.

FAKE NEWS

During this last election season, there was a tremendous amount of fabricated and completely untrue news sites and headlines out there. These sites are filled with fiction and misinformation.

The best way to prevent yourself from being misinformed online is to always check your sources. In some cases, if you are still unsure, check your sources, sources.
