When was your first concert?
My first public recital was on March 26, 1778...it was billed as "little son of six years" though I was actually 7. I played for the Empress Maria Theresia.
I was not very impressive.

How did it come about that you were appointed Assistant Court Organist at the age of 10?
My father was a court singer and an alcoholic. His voice worsened and he no longer could support our family.

Did you have any formal training?
Yes. At 13, the court sent me to Vienna. But I returned home a few weeks later when my mother fell ill. I remained there and was recognized as the city's most promising young court musician.

When did you catch your first big break composing?
At the age of 19 when Holy roman Emperor Joseph II died. I was asked to compose a musical memorial in his honor.
