PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SLATE:

  • Slate is a metamorphic rock that forms from mudstone or shale.
  • The mudstone or shale normally contains clay or volcanic ash.
  • Slate is unique in that it does not require any type of cementation to hold its particles together.
  • It has a very attractive appearance and it is also durable.

MICAS:

  • The mica group of sheet silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals includes several closely related materials having close to perfect basal cleavage.
  • All are monoclinic, with a tendency towards pseudohexagonal crystals, and are similar in chemical composition.
  • The nearly perfect cleavage, which is the most prominent characteristic of mica, is explained by the hexagonal sheet-like arrangement of its atoms.

FELDSPAR:

  • Feldspar is a blanket term for a very large group of minerals that are extremely abundant on Earth.
  • Around 60% of the Earth's crust is made up of these minerals, in fact, and they have numerous uses for humans, ranging from scouring solutions to glassware
  • The distinguishing feature of minerals in the feldspar group is that they are comprised of silicates of aluminum blended with other metals like potassium, calcium, sodium, and sometimes barium.

BEDROCK:

  • Bedrock (also termed Bed rock ) is a layer of undisturbed rock usually located beneath a surface layer of soil or other material.
  • In areas of high erosion , bedrock may become exposed to the surface.
  • Bedrock can be of igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic origin and forms the upper surface of the rocky foundation that composes the earth's crust .

TECTONIC PLATES:

  • Plate tectonics (from the Greek word for "one who constructs") is a theory of geology developed to explain the phenomenon of continental drift, and is currently the theory accepted by the vast majority of scientists working in this area.
  • In the theory of plate tectonics the outermost part of the Earth's interior is made up of two layers, the outer lithosphere and the inner asthenosphere.
