HISTORY OF IODINE

  • Discovered in 1811 by Bernard Courtois
  • Was looking for a way to kill humans to help Napoleon
  • French army was short on supplies so he tried to help them

NAME AND SYMBOL HISTORY

  • Came from the Greek word "iodes" means "violet"
  • Symbol comes from Iodine "I"
  • (Iodine gas color is violet)

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Halogen that possesses characteristics of metals
  • Kelp and other plants are grown in iodine-rich soil
  • Common product is Iodized Salt

  • Nearly black
  • Solid at room temp.
  • Highly reactive with other elements
  • Can be dangerous when highly concentrated
  • It is nonmetallic

WHERE ITS FOUND

  • Iodides of seawater and seaweed
  • Found in Chilean saltpeter & nitrate bearing earth
  • Brackish waters in salt and oil wells
  • Also found in brines from old sea deposits

  • Naturally found in solid form
  • Costs about $0.08 per gram
  • Mostly used for medical purposes
