REASONS WHY PEOPLE IMMIGRATED

  • Many immigrants from Ireland decided to migrate to Ellis Islands because of better job opportunities
  • In the late 1800's Ireland had a great famine
  • Employment rate was very low due to the costs of World War 1
  • Immigrants found opportunities in the U.S with factories, along with canals and railroads.

JOURNEY TO THE U.S

  • 90% of Irish immigrants made their way to England by iron steam ships
  • Once they arrived,ships depotred from Liverpool , New England
  • Ships were crowded, dark, dirty, and etc
  • More than a thousand passengers were on the ship
  • Immigrants were on the ship about a month before arriving to Ellis Island, NY

ONCE THEY ARRIVED

  • Once they arrived 75% of the immigrants were Irish
  • A quarter of New York's population was Irish
  • They were not able to buy property because they could not afford to
  • The irish later started to better their social class and community

LIVING CONDITIONS

  • Living in shacks cobbled together out of discarded boards and other debris
  • Crammed into shanty towns
  • Was very unsanitary
  • No water filtration
  • Many disease is being spread around

CHALLENGES FACED

  • Irish were not very skilled ;faced difficulty getting employment
  • Living conditions were very bad
  • They were discriminated by other races
  • Faced difficulty with religion statice
