OLDFIELD PLANTATION

  • Located-Okatie, Beaufort County
  • 1st owner-Governor Robert Johnson
  • Most recent owner-Ti Oldfield development

TIMELINE

  • 1752-the property was transferred to Gabriel Manigualt
  • 1781-British troops were sent to burn the plantation because of a fervent speech
  • 1971-Robin Carrier purchased the property

FACTS ABOUT OLDFIELD

  • 1st owners got the land from the Lords Proprietors
  • Major Wig served in the Revolutionary War and was held prisoner
  • It is now used for weddings and golfing.

  • Slaves weren't given beds
  • Music and religion were sources of strength
  • Females and children worked in houses

What it looks like

LAWS/RULES

  • Slaves work from 6am-5pm
  • Everyone must go to some type of religious practice on Sunday.
  • Ask permission before leaving the plantation.
  • Every other week, slaves rotate jobs
  • Master's children must go to school Mon-Thurs (slaves until 15)
  • Animals must be taken care of by 3pm

MORE RULES...

  • 20 wagons of indigo must be shipped weekly
  • Slaves can do whatever they want after 5pm (following rules)
  • Slaves may sell 20% of crops for their own profit (split)
  • Slaves must be in dwellings by 10pm
  • Don't destroy property or litter!
  • Slaves will be provided nice clothing

Consequences

  • If slaves leave the plantation without permission, they gain 4 hours of work
  • If slaves fail at work they don't eat dinner
  • If number of wagons is not met, slaves will have to work a number of extra hours depending on age.
  • If slaves are sick, they will make up 1/2 the hours they missed.
