Why is there an increase in Iron deficiencies in teens?

An Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency and is one of the leading causes of anemia. In today’s society having an Iron deficiency is becoming more and more common especially among teenage girls. The media is constantly promoting vegan, vegetarian and paleo diets. Many celebrities are choosing to go vegan, when meals are planned correctly it’s a good diet, but many people forget that they have to eat other sources of iron and protein such beans and legumes.

By definition an Iron deficiency is when blood lacks healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen around your body which is why it’s important they are healthy. Having an Iron deficiency can make you feel tired and have shortness of breath. Other symptoms include: Extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin, chest pain, dizziness or lightheadedness, cold hands and feet, increased heart rate, poor appetite and headaches. Before you start taking iron supplements you should see a doctor because overloading on iron can be dangerous for your liver and can cause of consequences.

Consequences in Today's Society

In today’s society teenagers are constantly surrounded by the media whether it's social media, magazines, television or anything else teens are always been subjected to a form of media. Now more than ever the media has been talking more and more about “going vegan”, vegetarian and paleo diets. What many teens don’t realise it isn’t just about not eating meat, you have to find other sources of iron or risk becoming anemic. Good sources of iron include: eggs, leafy green vegetables and other iron rich foods.
