PRESENTATION OUTLINE

IRON

  • Hematite
  • Cumbria, England; Elba, Italy
  • Magnetite
  • Kiruna, Sweden, the Adirondack area in New York
  • Pilbara region of Western Australia

GATHERING IRON

  • Raw ore is mined right from the ground combined with unwanted gangue
  • The ore is seperated from the gangue by washing away the lighter soil from
  • the crushed iorn ore
  • Iron ore is then sent to a bloomery to undergo the smelting process

IRON ORE PROCESSING

  • Iron ores consist of oxygen and iron atoms bonded together into molecules
  • Iron ore undergoes a process to remove the oxygen to make metallic iron
  • Carbon is used because the strength of a carbon-oxygen bond is greater
  • than that of the iron-oxygen bond, at high temperatures
  • Iron ore must be powdered and mixed with coke, to be burnt in what is called smelting

ENVIORNMENTAL IMPACTS

  • Air and noise pollution
  • Water contamination from smelting
  • Displacement of wildfire
  • Erosion and sediment
  • Soil degradation

HOW IRON IS USED

  • Pots, pans, fences, and ornamental items
  • Mostly used in steel making
