• For thousands of years ,the Iroquois lived in what is now called tne United States
• In the early 1600s they formed a well-organized federation
• This political alliance ,called the league of Iroquois,still exist today

• Families were organized into clans named after animals.
• The Turtle,Wolf,and the bear clans were common to all five Iroquois nations.
• People inherited clan membership from their mother's side of the family
