Is the Constitution a Pro-slavery Document?

By Regan Scott

Yes.

  • Although the Constitution doesn't specifically say "slave," there are a few important factors that lead to it being at least slavery-tolerating.

The Three-Fifths Compromise

  • The Three-Fifths Compromise was added to the Constitution specifically so the Southern states would join the new Union. Even if the Founding Fathers had wanted to ban slavery (which I highly doubt they did), states like Georgia and the Carolinas wouldn't have joined these United States.

Slave-Owning Delegates

  • Of the 55 Convention delegates, about 46% owned slaves.
