THE BIRTH OF A POET

  • He was born in Bristol, England in 1890

His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia

  • He had 5 siblings

CHILDHOOD

His family moved to the east side of London (Jewish community)

CHILDHOOD

  • There his parents set up a butchers shop.
  • Soon it was confiscated and his parents were forced to work as itinerants for the rest of his life.

TEENAGE YEARS

  • He became interested in poetry and visual arts.
  • At age 14, he began to work as an engraver apprentice.

TEENAGE YEARS

During his spare time he practiced painting

YOUNG ADULT

  • He eventually showed so much promise in the visual arts that he was granted funds to attend the Slade Art School, a significant center of aesthetic theory.

ILLNESS

  • He suffered from chronic bronchitis which ended his college career.
  • To cure himself he moved to a warmer climate whether (South Africa)
  • He lived with his sister

DILLEMA

  • While others wrote about war as a patriotic sacrifice Rosenberg was against it.

DILEMA

  • However, as he needed employment to support his mother, he went back to England.
  • On his return he joined the British army.

ON THE TRENCHES OF WORLD WAR 1

  • Rosenberg was assigned to the 12th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment.
  • This battalion was characterized for having men under the usual minimum height of 5'3".

  • He turned down an offer to become lance corporal.
  • He was transferred to another battalion where he served on the western front in France
