PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ANOREXIA

Anorexia
Is a serious physical and emotional illness in which an abnormal fear of being fat leads to very poor eating habits and a dangerous loss in weight
(National Eating Disorders Association).

PROBLEMS

  • Life threatening disorder
  • Anyone can get the problem
  • People dont know

Eat?

People struggling with Anorexia still see themselves as fat (Nickelson)

5-20% of all people with Anorexia end up dying from this disorder.
(The Scripps Research Institute)
Most of them are dancers

Ballet is based on how the dancer moves, it all depends on how they look. People go to see them dance. They go to see a performance. They go to see someone dance. Since the audience is there to watch, ballerinas like to look their best. (Grohol)

All day, everyday

"There's nothing to hide on someones body when their job is to let people watch them when they're moving around in skin tight clothes." (Nickelson)

"In magazines, reading all the dancers talk about their eating habits and how to stay skinny is not very helpful to someone who struggles with their eating." (Kristi)

The best dancers are characterized as having "narrow hips, a slim middle, small breasts, delicate looking arms, and a short height" (Kristi). Therefore, some dancers think the easiest way to getting this body type is to not eat.

Is there too much pressure?
