PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE PROBLEM OF ISIS

PRESENTED BY: MICHAEL BALERIA, ZACH FOOTE, AND JOHN HARRINGTON

A BIT ON NAMES..

  • ISIS: Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. The name of the group when it rose to power
  • ISIL: Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. This is just a different transition of ISIS. Only Obama uses it.
  • IS: Islamic State. The name the group adopted during its "rebranding" effort showing it is more than just a regional power.
  • Daesh: the acronym of the group when written in Arabic.

AND SO IT BEGINS

  • AQI was a cell of al Qaeda that focused itself in Iraq
  • It frequently went back and forth between Syria (where it got supplies) and Iraq (where it was fighting)
  • Many of its members were sent to Camp Bucca and were able to meet up with other radicals, and form the plan of establishing ISIS
  • When the Syrian civil war broke out, AQI saw a opportunity and moved into Syria, merging with the cell there, in direct violation of order from al Qaeda HQ
  • After a small mini-war between the two groups, they formally separated and went their own ways

HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?

  • Feelings of disenfranchisement among Sunnis.
  • Ex-Saddam Lieutenants
  • Chaos in Syria and Iraq
  • Lots of money and weapons

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?

  • The list of crimes committed by ISIS is a very long list
  • Just some of the major things they have done include: terrorist attacks on other countries, the genocidal massacre of people they deem "unfit", racketeering, extortion, rape, murder, trafficking, and many other unspeakable acts

WHAT VALUES HAVE THEY BROKEN

  • ISIS has broken pretty much every CST there is, but especially CSTs 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7
  • They have also desecrated numerous ideals, traditions, and have ignored any part of common sense.

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE

  • Over 8,216 air strikes have been carried out
  • Dozens of countries have committed either ground or air forces to the war against ISIS
  • Buildup of ground forces has begun

THE FUTURE?

  • The US has already sent Special Forces to advise and help the Iraqi army
  • A small detachment of marines and artillery has been set up to support the Iraqi army
  • Saudi Arabia and other nations have expressed interest in committing ground troops to the region
  • Possible peace talks in Geneva may end the Civil War, and direct attention solely on defeating ISIS
