ORIGINS

  • Islam was revealed over time.
  • In the 7th century CE, the
  • Muhammad (pbuh) taught the
  • word of Allah or God to the people.
  • He was the most prominent of the prophets.

MEANING OF ISLAM

  • Islam means submission
  • to the will of God.

PRE-ISLAMIC RELIGIONS

  • Many religions were polytheistic.
  • Some worshipped idols.
  • Judaism, Christianity, Atheism
  • were present as well.

BECOMING MUSLIM

  • To convert to Islam, one must
  • pronounce the Shahada,
  • a proclamation of faith.
  • It can be in public or private.
  • You have a new life as an Islamic person.

PRACTICES

  • Muslims pray five times a day.
  • It helps connect body, mind, and
  • to a higher power.
  • Muslims follow the Five Pillars of Islam.

FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM

  • Shahadah: faith
  • Salat: prayer
  • Zakat: concern for others
  • Sawn: self-purification
  • Hajj: pilgrimage

ORIGIN OF PILLARS

  • The pillars were created after
  • Muhammad's (pbuh) death.
  • They serve as anchoring points
  • to direct life.

HAJJ

  • Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
  • It is an obligation for those who are
  • able to go.
  • It is in the twelfth month of the Islamic year.
  • Involves lots of prayer and ritual.

COMPARISONS

  • Many religions involve some form
  • of prayer or meditation.
  • There are rituals to confirm your
  • part in the religion.

KA'BA

  • The ka'ba is a shrine in the middle
  • of the Great Mosque in Mecca.
  • Muslims orient towards it for
  • daily prayer.
  • It is a cube shaped structure, 15m high.

MUHAMMAD (PBUH)

  • Muhammad (pbuh) was born in 570 CE.
  • He believed that God revealed himself
  • to him and that he should teach others.
  • He lead his followers to become the
  • leaders in Saudi Arabia.

QUR'AN

  • It is the holy book for Muslims.
  • It is regarded as the sacred word
  • of God and his relationship with
  • Muhammad (pbuh).

SACRED SOURCES

  • Other sacred texts are Sunnah
  • and Hadith.
  • They are other religious texts.
  • They aren't as universal as the
  • Qur'an.

JIHAD

  • Jihad is a struggle or effort, holy war.
  • It can be an internal struggle, a
  • struggle to build a good society,
  • or the struggle to defend Islam.
