FOUNDER

  • Muhammad is the founder.
  • He was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia around 5790
  • Muhammad died on June 8, 632 AD

ORIGINS

  • It began when God revealed the verses of Qur'an to Muhammad.
  • The Prophet was meditating in a mountain cave in Mecca in 610 AD.
  • God sent the angel Gabriel to reveal the verses.

  • Sunni- belived that rulers should follow the Sunna.

  • The Qur'an & Hadith are the names of their sacred text.
  • Qur'an- believed to be the literal word of God.
  • Hadith- secondary text that refers to Muhammad and his followers.

  • They only believe in one God named Allah.

RELIGIOUS LAW

  • The law regulates the family life, moral conduct, and business and community life.

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP

  • Imam is the arabian word meaning leader, also is tradition in Shia beliefs.
  • Ayatollah means the sign of God; those who carry it are considered experts in islamic studies.

CENTRAL BELIEFS (FIVE PILLARS):

  • Faith- person who became muslim must testify to the statement of faith.
  • Prayer- 5x's a day, must face toward Mecca to pray.
  • Alms- Muslims have a responsibility to support the less fortunute.
  • Fasting- Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast between dawn & sunset.
  • Prilgrimage- preforms the "Hajj" atleast once.

WORSHIP PRACTICES

  • The Five Pillars of Faith are the five religious duties expected of every Muslim.
  • Muslims show devotion by doing lifelong acts of worship known as Five Pillars.
  • These include faith, prayer, charity, fasting and a pilgrimage to Mecca.

SECTS/DENOMINATIONS

  • Members of one group do not reconize others who follow the same group, open conflict is uncommon

RITUALS/CELEBRATIONS

  • The religious rituals of Islam are relatively few in number, but really important.
  • The Five Pillars of Islam are five practices regarded by all sects essential to Muslim faith.
  • Other notable Islamic practices include the mystical rituals of Sufism.

  • ISIS (islamic state of Iraq and Seria) go into christian houses giving 4 choices.
  • 1) convert to muslim
  • 2) pay the tax to not be muslims
  • 3) leave the city
  • 4) sword -cut off hands or beheaded them-
