CATHOLICISM

  • All baptized Catholics are entitled to a roman catholic funeral
  • Catechumens are also given a roman catholic funeral
  • Catholic funerals have three main parts to them:
  • 1. Vigil of the deceased (calling hours)
  • 2. Funeral liturgy in form of mass (Eucharistic Liturgy)

CATHOLICISM(CONTD.)

  • 3. Committal of the body into the ground or a crypt
  • Catholics believe in an afterlife
  • Heaven- The Lords kingdom
  • Purgatory- A median place for cleansing of those in preparation
  • for heaven. Hell- a place in which corrupted souls & the devil dwells.

ISLAM

  • Muslims believe that death is a departure from the life of this world
  • But they also believe that this death is the end of that being's existence
  • Believe in a hospice system

Muslims believe that eternal life is to come and they pray for God's mercy to be with those who join the being's of eternal life.

ISLAM DIFFERENCES

  • Body is temporarily covered with a white sheet
  • Only can say things that would please the lord during their grieving period
  • Muslims strive to get the deceased buried ASAP that day if possible.
  • Specific grieving or mourning period of 4 months and 10 days
  • Laid in grave without coffin

ISLAM DIFFERENCES(CONTD.)

  • Laid on their right side or facing mecca when put in the grave
  • Preffered to be buried in the city in which they died.
  • Don't use tombstones
  • Wrapped in sheets of cleanliness
  • Rather not use autopsy

  • Not covered with a sheet
  • No specific amount of grieving and mourning time
  • Placed in a coffin
  • Use tombstones
  • Take thier time in planning the funeral

  • Buried in whatever city the family choose
  • Family doesn't have to wash and shroud the body
  • Deceased dont lay facing mecca
  • Different prayers
  • Does more of a church service or mass unlike islam

SIMILARITIES

  • Both bury with deceased eyes closed
  • Both use similar to everyday prayers for funerals
  • Both have hospice
  • Both encourage family and friends to comfort someone near death
  • Both believe in an eternal life

  • Both believe in a heaven or a eternal life with God
  • Both believe in prayer for Gods mercy to be there
  • Both believe that deceased shouldn't be moved and tampered with
  • Unless necessary.
