What is Mosaic

  • A picture or pattern produced by arranging together small pieces of stone, tile, glass, etc also can be further on painted with different colours is called a mosaic.

Technique used in Mosaics?

  • There are two ways to make a mosaic. One is by the direct method and the other is by the indirect method

  • In this method the pieces are arranged in such a way that the design looks 3D and thus It does not produce a smooth even surface, hence is not suitable for floors.

  • This method is used for mosaics which are really big. In this method, the piece is made of mostly fiber glass and is flat enough to be used for flooring.

  • Islamic mosaics were mainly geometric and mathematical.
  • An important feature of Islamic mosaics is their incorporation into forms outside of purely artistic mediums such as paintings.Islamic Mosaics adorn both religious and secular buildings, but also appear in glassware such as dishes and bowls.

  • Islamic Abstract Mosaic Art Tens of thousands of individual tiles make up the geometric Arabesque tiling on the dome of the Tomb of Hafez in Shiraz. These intricate mosaic patterns are known as Girih, and can be seen in Muslim cultures around the world.

  • Geometry and tessellations were the one of the special techniques used in Islamic mosaics. This technique was both used in direct and indirect methods.

What I like about Islamic Mosaics

  • I like Islamic mosaics as they use a variety of colours The designs are very ordinary and are like optical illusions. Also, most Isalmic mosaics are religious but are really difficult to find what the artist is depicting in the painting and for me researching on that is very interesting.
