Chapter16
Karana is looking for the aleuts ship and the white men's ship everyday as she builds a canoe. She tries out the canoe and finds a huge devilfish in a cave.
After she gets out of the cave, she decides to hide the canoe in it in case the aleuts come.

Chapter17
Karana makes a new spear, and goes to Coral Cove to try it out. She also tries to spear the giant devilfishy, and fails. Rontu gets in a fight with other dogs after she lets him out. Rontu wins and never leaves Karana again.

Chapter 18
Some birds make a nest near Karana's house and lay eggs. The eggs hatch, but they're very ugly. She names the bigger one Tainor, and the other one Lurai.

Chapter 19
A year has gone by, and Karana still hasn't speared the giant devilfish. At last she gives up, and starts gathering abalones for the winter. One morning, Karana and Rontu were gathering shellfish, when they spotted the giant devilfish. She and Rontu trie to capture the devilfish. It is a great struggle, but Karana wins.

Chapter 20
Karana goes fishing with a new fishing net. A pack of wild dogs came and Rontu started howling.The Aleuts come and there is girl with them. Karana gets her stuff and moves to a cave until the Aleuts leave.

Chapter 21
Karana waches the Aleuts' camp. She is afraid that the girl will discover her hideout. She hides in the cave for several days. Karana sews a skirt while she hides. She hears footsteps, and the girl is standing right in front of her. The girl says that Rontu is hers, but Karana says Rontu belongs to her.

Chapter 22
Karana becomes friends with the girl. They talked to each other and Karana gave Tutok a circlet for her head. The next day Tutok had to leave. All night Karana thought of Tutok and missed her.
