SOUTHEAST ASIA ISSUES

CURRENT PROBLEMS CONCERNING SOUTHEAST ASIA

SOUTHEAST ASIAN CORAL REEFS

  • highest levels of biodiversity for the world's marine ecosystems.
  • Coral reefs are developed by the carbonate-based skeletons of a variety of animals and algae.
  • overtime, the reefs build up to the surface in oceans&are found in shallow, warm salt water.
  • The sunlight filters through clear water allows microscopic organisms to live and reproduce.
  • An estimation of 70-90% of fish caught are dependent on coral reefs in Southeast Asia

DEPLETION

  • 50% of Southeast Asia’s coral reefs are at very high levels of threat.
  • 64% of the regions reefs are threatened by overfishing
  • 56% are threatened by destructive fishing techniques.
  • Human activities threaten about 88% of Southeast Asia’s coral reefs,
  • Most of the destruction is due to illegal fishing practices/explosives.

MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

  • Urban Excess -industrial activities/overcrowding of human habitation.
  • Deforestation/Desertification-more than 1/3 of the land is at risk.
  • Poor farmers use improper irrigation/fertilization=increased toxic soils.
  • Water- so much demand for it will be increasingly polluted from sewage.
  • Overfishing, Global Warming, and Air Pollution are also major issues.
