VIOLENCE AGAINST AFRICAN REFUGEES IN ITALY

POPULATION

  • The population of Italy is 59.83 million.
  • Of that amount there are roughly 140,000 African Immigrants.

ORGIN

  • Most of the immigrants are from Libya
  • To get to Italy they go on boats and cross the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Once they reach Italy they board a a port in Sicily and a rescued by the Italian coast guard.

COSTS

  • Citizens of Italy are angry with the government because to rescue these refugees it sea it costs about 11.5 million dollars.
  • It is also pricey for the refugees to escape because they have to pay human traffickers anywhere from $500 to $1300 to board a decrepit (leaky boat).

ANGER

  • Because of rescues being such a high cost it just dips further into the welfare cuts of a country with an already struggling economy.
  • This makes Italians angry and the seek to take revenge against the refugees.

VIOLENCE

  • Cities all across experiencing mob violence and Attucks targeting immigrants
  • Human rights watch reports that immigrants have been victims of brutal attacks.

GOVERNMENT

  • The government has failed to take effective measures against the numerous amount of hate crimes.
  • Law enforcement officials have insufficient training to be able to take action
