WHAT IS IUD

  • Small contraceptive device
  • Inserted into the uterus
  • Most effective type of reversible birth control method

COPPER IUDs (ParaGard)

  • Work mainly by affecting the way sperm move
  • Copper wire coiled around the stem
  • Two copper sleeves along the arms that release copper to bathe lining of uterus
  • ParaGard proves inflammatory reaction that is toxic to sperm that prevents fertilization
  • Prevents pregnancy up to ten years after insertion

HORMONAL IUDs (Mirena)

  • May prevent egg from leaving ovary
  • Thickens women's cervical mucus
  • The mucus blocks sperm from joining with egg
  • Thins the lining of the uterus and partially suppresses ovulation

PREVENTING PREGNANCY

  • Theory 1: the IUD makes the uterus hostile to sperm
  • Theory 2: prevents implantation
