Southern Colonies

Plantations and small farms
plantations mostly like villages
at the center of a plantation, was the planters house
many enslaved Africans were needed
cooks and maids worked in planters house
many farms were built in the backcountry

Family Life
Children of wealthy planters were edu. at home
Boys learned how to ride horses and hunt
Girls learned how to sew and sing
Back country children of farmers often didn't have school
they learned plowing, hunting, sewing, and cooking

Southern Slavery
indentured servants did hard work on plantations
planters began to use Africans as workers
in the 1600s and 1700s more slaves were brought
in 1750s Africans lived throughout the 13 colonies

Life Under Slavery
many slaves were separated from family
children and adults worked on plantations
slaves were punished and sometimes killed
poor food,clothing and shelter
some slaves fought back by running away
6.
African American Culture
there community was like a large family
believed in Christianity which was a strength
created powerful spirituals
created a language called Gullah
made many instruments and played them
