BRANCH RICKEY AND HIS PROMISE TO JACKIE ROBINSON

  • "You were brought here, Jackie, to play for the Brooklyn organization. Perhaps on Montreal to start with."
  • "The opposition would shout insults, come in spikes first, throw at your head."
  • "Mr. Rickey,' Robinson said, 'they've been throwing at my head for a long time."
  • "Mr. Rickey,' he murmured, 'do you want a ballplayer who's afraid to fight back?"
  • "I want a ballplayer with guts enough not to fight back!' Rickey exclaimed almost savagely."

WHY IS THIS CONSIDERED CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE?

  • At the time this was very much against the law.
  • African Americans had their own league"Negro League."
  • Branch Rickey was making a very risky decision asking Jackie Robinson to join the white league also known as the MLB.
  • There was basically segregation in Pro Baseball.
