JACKSON'S POLICIES

• Thought relocation would end conflict
• He passed the Removal Act of 1830
• Some Native Americans obeyed the law....
• Others did not.....

• 5 relatively advanced tribes in the south
• Were gradually becoming acclimated to the new culture

WHITE ATTITUDES

INDIAN REMOVAL ACT

• Passed by Congress in 1830
• Allowed US to remove Natives from land
• Cherokee sued Georgia over the law
• The case went to Supreme Court

CHEROKEE VS. GEORGIA

• Supreme Court case
• Court ruled in favor of Cherokee
• Cherokee were supposed to keep their land
• Jackson ignored the ruling (first ever)
• Jackson made a "treaty" (without actual negotiations)

THE "TREATY"

• Basically, Jackson stole the land
• No actual representatives
• Gave all Cherokee land to Georgia
• Cherokee got $5 million and a reservation

TRAIL OF TEARS

• Jackson sent an army to force the Natives out west
• 1000 Natives were forced into Oklahoma region
• About 1/8 died during travel
• Jackson tried to say it was for the good of the tribes
• Obviously there was conflict, and fighting lasted for several years

SEMINOLE WAR

BLACK HAWK WAR

• Final battle to remove woodland indians
• Allied tribes led by Black Hawk
• The tribes occupied vacant lands in Illinois
• White settlers reacted brutally and violently
• The tribes fled and Black Hawk was captured

SETTLIN' OKLAMHOMY

• Okla was known as "indian territory"
• The land was bad and unwanted
• It was "safety distant"
