Cherokee sued Georgia over the law
The case went to Supreme Court

Supreme Court case
Court ruled in favor of Cherokee
Cherokee were supposed to keep their land
Jackson ignored the ruling (first ever)
Jackson made a "treaty" (without actual negotiations)

Cherokee got $5 million and a reservation

Jackson sent an army to force the Natives out west
1000 Natives were forced into Oklahoma region
About 1/8 died during travel
Jackson tried to say it was for the good of the tribes
Obviously there was conflict, and fighting lasted for several years

Allied tribes led by Black Hawk
The tribes occupied vacant lands in Illinois
White settlers reacted brutally and violently
The tribes fled and Black Hawk was captured
