EARLY YEARS’S AS A COMPOSER

  • George Gershwin dropped out of school at age 15
  • Gershwin played in several New York nightclubs and began his stint as a “song-plugger” in New York's Tin Pan Alley.
  • After three years of pounding out tunes on the piano for demanding customers, he had transformed into a highly skilled and dexterous composer.

AFTERMATH AND ASSESSMENT

  • By July, Gershwin exhibited impaired motor skills and drastic weight loss, and he required assistance in walking
  • He lapsed into a coma on July 9, and a spinal tap revealed the presence of a brain tumor
  • Gershwin never regained consciousness and died during surgery two days later.
