GAELIC POETS

  • There were lots of Gaelic speaking clans in the Jacobites
  • Loads of Gaelic poets supported Jacobites
  • Lots of Jacobite songs are Gaelic:
  • Òran do Phrionnsa Tearlach, O Hi Ri Ri, tha E Tighinn
  • Most of these songs date from the Jacobite Rebellion

JACOBITE SONGS IN SCOTS

  • There are fewer original Jacobite songs in Scots
  • Some of them are about famous battles
  • Hey Johnnie Cope mocks an English general
  • He ran away from a battle at Prestonpans
  • Some songs, like the Braes of Killiecrankie were melodies first

CHANGING TIMES

  • By 1780, to be Jacobite was no longer revolutionary
  • It was nostalgic and hankering after a golden age
  • New, romantic lyrics were composed
  • Sometimes they used old Gaelic tunes
  • The Skye Boat Song is an example of new lyrics

  • One of the most famous Scots wrote lyrics for a Jacobite song
  • Sir Walter Scott wrote a poem about Bonnie Dundee
  • Bonnie Dundee was a famous Jacobite general
  • He died at KIlliecrankie
  • At the time, the establishment rejoiced, but later he was idealised
