FRENCH MISSIONARY
Jacques was a French missionary sent to the new world (America) in 1666
His job was to teach the native peoples
He moved to help missionaries in the Great Lakes region.
There he heard rumor of a great river called the Mississippi.
The natives told him it was a great trade rout.
3.
EXPLORATION
Jacques requested permission to explore the great river
He was granted permission in 1673
He joined the expedition with Louis Jolliet.
They left May 17, with two canoes and five French voyageurs.
4.
THE DANGERS
They ended up about 435 miles away from the golf of Mexico.
They encountered many native groups that feared them.
They also had to face the bitter cold of winter by Lake Michigan
5.
EXPLORATION RESULTS
The exploration was successful!
They had traveled most of the way down the Mississippi River
They also made friends with some of the natives.
6.
GOOR OR BAD?
The exploration had a good effect.
It made it so the Mississippi River was no longer a rumor.
The exploration made it so the river could be used as a trade rout.
