SHAKESPEARE'S THEATER AND TIME

GLOBE THEATER (TIME AND PLACE)

  • The original globe theater burned down in 1613
  • The second Globe Theater was rebuilt the next year in 1614
  • Plays we're preformed during the day
  • Plays lasted several hours and had no intermissions

GLOBE THEATER (THE PEOPLE)

  • Held 2 or 3 thousand people
  • People who stood in the front were called groundlings
  • Women began acting in plays in 1660
  • Hazelnuts were a favorite food people ate while watching plays
  • London city police hated the theater because of the plagues

SHAKESPEARES IMPACT IN THE THEATER

  • Co-owner of the theater
  • Acted in plays as well as wrote them
  • He wrote 37 plays that we know about
  • Introduced 3000 words to the English language from playwriting

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE THEATER

  • Most lighting had to be provided
  • It costs more as you go up (for seats)
  • All they had was actors and costumes
  • No curtain between acts and scenes, instead they used a "napkin"
  • Plagues were strong enough to close down the theaters

  • Many of Shakespeare's words and expressions are out of use today
  • Some of these words are:
  • Anon - immediately
  • Withal - besides
  • Aye - yes

QUEEN ELIZABETH

  • Queen Elizabeth was a reigning monarch during Shakespeare's time
  • She studied many languages
  • If she hadn't liked plays the theater would have been shut down
