On April 12 1961 The Soviet Union launched a space ship into orbit with cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first man to travel into space at the age of 27.
This was quite a blow to the United States which had scheduled it’s first flight for may that same year.

The first computer mouse was made in Stanford Research Institute,California by Douglas Engelbart with the help of Bill English.
It was originally referred to as the
X Y indicator.

Kevlar

Kevlar is mainly known for being in bullet proof vests but in fact it can be used in bicycle tyres and also racing sails.
Kevlar was invented in 1966 by polish-American chemist Stephanie Kwolek whilst she was working at DuPont because they were anticipating a gasoline shortage so needed to make a new formula to make car tyres.

First portable calculator

The first portable calculator was invented in 1967 by a team from Texas Instruments incorporated created a development team including Jerry D. Merryman, James H. Van Dessel and Jack st Clair Kilby.

The internet

The internet was originally just a network of 4 computers called the arpanet. It took place in 1969 and was funded by America’s defence departments research project agency.
By 1971 the arpanet had increased it’s size to 23 computers. It’s original use was to be for people to work on a computer but it was clear that people were just using it for email.

First airbag

In 1971 ford tested out the airbag on the steering wheel. 2 years later Chevrolet automobile had it but it was only for government use. In the end the Oldsmobile tornado was the first public car to be installed with an airbag.

Apple 1

The apple 1 was a tabletop computer released by the apple computer Company (now apple) but was actually hand built by Steve Wozniak. The idea of selling the computer came from Wozniak’s friend Steve Jobs (co-founder of apple).

The first personal stereo

The first personal stereo was the Sony Walkman. Released in 1979 it was made by Akio Morita, Masaru Ibuka (co-founder of Sony) and kozo ohsone.
