BACKGROUND INFO

  • James Walker Fannin Jr. was born on January 1st, 1804 in Georgia.
  • James was adopted by his maternal grandfather .
  • He attended the University of Georgia at the age of 14.
  • He was a West Point dropout.
  • He settled in Velasco, Texas with his wife and two daughters in 1834.

TEXAS REVOLUTION

  • He joined the Texas Reovolution in the early stages.
  • One of the few men in Texas with any formal military training.
  • He was given command when the war broke out.
  • Commander and chief of the army from february 12- March 12, 1836

BATTLE OF GONZALES

  • October 2, 1835
  • First battle of the Texas revolution
  • Fannin was captain of the Brazo Guards

BATTLE OF CONCEPCION (OCTOBER 28,1835)

  • Commander at this battle along with Jim Bowie
  • Led 90 volunteer soilders
  • Encountered a larger Mexican force by the San Antonio River
  • Led to the siege of the San Antonio

CAPTURED

  • William Travis ordered James Fannin to help at the Alamo
  • Fannin refused stating logistical problems
  • Fannin was ordered to retreat to Victoria after the Alamo
  • Fannin led 350 men 5 days late to Victoria
  • Him and his army were captured by the Mexican Army

GOLIAD MASSACRE

  • He and His army died during the Goliad Massacre
  • March 27, 1836
  • Fannin was the last to be killed
  • He was shot in the head and burned
